How do you make a custom oil painting portrait from a photo?
You share the photo you want painted — a clear, well-lit image works best. We review it and discuss feasibility, then agree on canvas size, background, and style. Once confirmed and the advance is paid, our artist starts with a pencil sketch on canvas. We share that sketch for your approval before any paint is applied. Painting happens in layers, and we send work-in-progress images throughout so you can give feedback at each stage. Nothing is shipped without your final sign-off.
What is the price of an oil painting portrait in India?
Oil portraits at Stoned Santa start at Rs. 5,000 for a single-person portrait on rolled canvas. The final price depends on four things: how many people or pets are in the painting, the canvas size (we do everything from 6x6 inch miniatures to life-size), how detailed you want the background, and whether you need framing. A standard couple portrait in a mid-size canvas with a simple background typically falls in the Rs. 8,000 to 12,000 range. Share your requirements and we will give you a specific quote.
How long does an oil painting portrait take to complete?
A standard 36x24-inch oil portrait takes 7 to 14 working days to paint. After painting, the canvas needs 2 to 3 days to dry before it can be safely packaged. Shipping across India takes another 3 to 5 days. Total from order to delivery — plan for roughly 2 to 3 weeks. If you have a hard deadline like a wedding or anniversary, tell us upfront and we will be straight with you about what is achievable.

What materials are used in oil painting portraits?
All oil portraits are made on canvas — either stretched over a wooden frame or rolled. The artist first sketches the outline in pencil or charcoal, then builds the painting in layers using oil-based pigments. Once complete and dry, a protective varnish is applied. The varnish locks in the colours, prevents cracking, and gives the painting its characteristic depth. A properly varnished oil painting on quality canvas can last well over a hundred years.
Can you paint subjects other than people — pets, landscapes, deities?
Absolutely. For a single person, A3 (16x12 inches) is a popular starting size — substantial on a wall without being overwhelming. For couples, 20x16 to 24x18 inches works well. Family portraits with 3 or more people benefit from 30x24 inches or larger so each face gets proper detail. For a living room or office statement piece, we go up to life-size.
